make grant proposal stand out

How to make your grant proposal stand out

We received a great question from a Twitter follower recently: What is the most important thing to mention in a grant request letter that will differentiate your letter from all the others? How can I make my grant proposal stand out?

We wanted to share my response because we think this is something lots of nonprofits struggle with. When your grant request is sitting in a stack of hundreds — maybe even thousands — how do you make it stand out?

Apart from the extensive advice we’ve given on how to write a great grant proposal, one thing many nonprofits overlook when writing proposals is to show how they are different from other, similar organizations. For example, if the foundation you have applied to has three applications from after school programs for at-risk children in inner city Chicago, what makes yours different? What do you do that they don’t? And in the same vein, what makes you better?

This doesn’t mean calling out your competition and putting them down. Rather than focusing on what these other organizations may be lacking, concentrate on your own successes and positive attributes. This will go a long way in making your grant proposal stand out (in a good way, of course!) among the others.
